ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS…….A BOOK!

Do you know a child who utters those words? Probably not. Screen media has overtaken the minds of most children, and adults for that matter. The world has changed. Tablets, cell phones and the internet rule.

Besides the fact that screen media is addictive and hampers the development of children’s brains, plus social and language skills, it also diminishes the important emotional bonding time of parent and child. The world needs books and children need read a-louds. Children need cuddling in a loving adult’s lap and listening to the rhythm of the spoken word coupled with the rhythm of the parent’s heartbeat. A time for emotional bonding.

And adults need an excuse for quieting down and being still.

Stop the world, breathe, and read to a child. Or read silently alone. Listen to your heartbeat slow down. Relax and read. Read and relax. It’s good for you and your child.
So, to promote literacy in your home, your community, consider reading to a child this holiday season.
