About Us

How We Began

Brown Sugar & Spice is owned by an African-American educator. Many years ago, she realized that parents and educators, like her, were looking for African-American children’s books with pictures and story plots that accurately and positively reflected our children.

Our Unique Collection Values:

Back then, in the 1970’s, it was clear that the American book publishing industry had very little to offer parents of children of color.

However, in the early 1980’s things began to change. Publishers realized that the African-American reader was a lucrative market, more Black publishers emerged and, almost explosively, books about African-American children became popular. Finding these books, screening for the best of the best and making them easily accessible to parents and educators was the primary goal of Brown Sugar & Spice at its launch.

Since then, the company has expanded to include a broad range of multicultural and early childhood literature for all children, plus books for teens and adults.  In addition, educational services, like professional development workshops for teachers and storytelling assembly programs were added.

Our motto is 3-fold:
1. Read out loud to your child everyday.
2. Celebrate Black History all year long.
3. Take time to research and share your family history.

The books in our collection are specially selected to help you reach the above three goals. So, we hope you enjoy our collection – Books chosen with care and with an eye on the history of people of color. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact us at:
